My News

IN what is perhaps the first such exercise conducted through the media, readers of MiD DAY have selected a 14-member Indian cricket team, which they feel is our best set, for the World Cup in March. The poll was conducted on a suggestion by Dakshesh Barot, of Jogeshwari, that the public should be allowed to select a team of its choice.
More than 300 readers submitted lists of players who they think should be in the squad for the big event in the West Indies next year.
Vote percentage
They sent lists by EMAIL, SMS, FAX and even by POST. We tallied your lists, one vote to the player for every mention in the lists, and the total number of votes represented as the VOTE PERCENTAGE FOR THE PARTICULAR PLAYER. The top 14 in this process are pictured alongside with the VOTE PERCENTAGE they secured.
Major lesson
If there is one major lesson in this remarkable exercise, it is that YOU are not prepared to leave the fortunes of India’s World Cup campaign in the hands of novices, and so YOU have chosen to rely on the old warhorses.
Take note
Another aspect is, that despite the terrible performance by the team on the current tour of South Africa, not one of YOU who sent in the selection lists criticised the team. Rather, many were hopeful that the fortunes of the team would change, soon, if we get the combination right.

CHOOSE TO RELY on the old warhorses in selection of a 14-man squad for the World Cup
YOU KNOW IT. Sourav Ganguly should be brought back. While the selection was not about the captaincy, about 10 per cent said they would like to see Dada leading the side, ‘because he has the aggression required to win’.
